Animal studies

AOD-9604 has been shown to reduce body weight in genetically obese mice and rats without negatively affecting glycemic control. In one study, rats treated with 500 micrograms per kilogram of body weight daily for 19 days lost more than 50% of their body weight.

Human studies

In a 12-week randomized clinical trial, subjects taking 1 milligram of AOD-9604 daily lost an average of 2.6 kilograms, compared to 0.8 kilograms for those taking a placebo. In a separate 23-week randomized clinical trial, subjects taking 1 milligram of AOD-9604 daily lost an average of 2.8 kilograms, compared to 0.8 kilograms for those taking a placebo.

-12-week randomized clinical trial
Subjects taking 1 mg of AOD-9604 per day lost an average of 2.6 kg, compared to 0.8 kg for those taking a placebo.

-23-week randomized clinical trial
Subjects taking 1 mg of AOD-9604 per day lost an average of 2.8 kg, compared to 0.8 kg for those taking a placebo.

-19-day study in obese Zucker rats
Daily oral doses of 500 microg/kg body weight reduced body weight by over 50%


Other studies have also found that AOD-9604 can reduce body weight in genetically obese mice without negatively affecting glycemic control. The most common side effects reported in clinical trials were mild or moderate headaches, diarrhea, flatulence, increased appetite, and nausea. However, multiple non-clinical studies have found no evidence of toxicological or genotoxicological concerns regarding the safety of AOD-9604.


AOD-9604 is also banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) because it can mimic the lipolytic properties of growth hormone and may be used as a performance enhancing drug.
